Michael Johnson's Journey from Dallas to Track Stardom
Early Life and Career
Michael Duane Johnson, born on September 13, 1967, in Dallas, Texas, is a retired American sprinter who dominated the track in the 1990s. Growing up in an impoverished neighborhood, Johnson's athletic talents were evident at a young age.
Records and Rivalry
Johnson rose to international prominence as a member of the 1992 Olympic 4x400m relay team. It was in 1996 that he achieved legendary status, winning the 200m and 400m gold medals at the Atlanta Olympics. His 19.32-second time in the 200m remains the world record. Johnson's intense rivalry with Donovan Bailey, the 100m champion of the era, added spice to their on-track battles.
