North Korea's National Flag: A Symbol of Unity and Pride
Background and History
The official flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) is defined in Article 170 of Chapter VII of the North Korean constitution. Introduced on July 10, 1948, the flag predates the proclamation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea by two months.
Design and Meaning
The North Korean flag features three horizontal bands: a blue top, a red middle triple-width band, and a blue bottom band. The red band represents the socialist revolution, while the blue bands symbolize unity and peace. The white disk in the center of the flag represents the purity and sovereignty of the Korean people. The five-pointed star within the disk symbolizes the five basic elements of the North Korean people: workers, peasants, intellectuals, youth, and soldiers.
